A day in the life of an American Soldier. The personal passages of everything from family life to war.

Another chapter yet written

American Soldier says,

Today accompanied by my wife and children I met with my new unit and took the oath of enlistment. The picture above was found on the net. I thought it was significant because the photo are Soldiers re-enlisting at Ziggurat of Ur, a famous archaeological site in Iraq, built around 2100 BC to honor the moon god Nanna.

Just like them, I didn’t need to re-enlist. I did it because in this day and age, where there is so much unpredictability, there needs to be Soldiers who will stand to defend our beloved country and freedoms. No matter if you are a supporter or not, you can count on a Soldier to preserve what many people take for granted. Freedom!

A heartfelt thank you to you (and your wife) on your decision to re-enlist! I realize that it was a two person choice. May you continue to be safe and I pray that you will be held in the arms of angels! Bless you both for the gift you are giving to our country!

  3. Kari Says:

    American Soldier,

In your other post, you referred to yourself as a “mere soldier”. I’m sorry, but there is no such thing. Just like there is no mere teacher, nurse, mother or father. It’s an unselfish occupation/calling lived for the benefit of others. Thank you and thanks to your family.

  4. adoptaplatoon_mommy Says:

As a single Mom myself (my oldest joining asap- at least accotrding to him) I cannot imagine how hard this is for you and you are as much as a “HERO” as your husband..don’t ever forget that. Hang in there, it is all worth it.

  8. Donna Says:

Hey! Congrats AS! Thanks for putting your life on the line for all of us back home.

And thanks for posting the cool pic of the Ziggurat. Most people forget that Abraham was from the land of Ur, but that he and his family were called out to go the promised land.

    I’m sure there’s some deep symbolism there - I just haven’t figured it out yet. I’m open to suggestions . . .
    Dan Castro

  20. Kat in GA Says:

Hey, I knew that about Abraham, LOL! Hmm…deep symbolism… hmmm…. now I’m gonna have to ponder on that for a while, LOL!!!!  You’re probly right, LOL!

  21. Edward Says:

    Hi AS,

I figured you couldn’t stay away. It is in your blood and soul, and you love your brothers-in-arms, and that sharing is the most intense and satisfying experience that any man or woman can have.

Thank you for loving your country so much. Thanks to your wife as well, for I know the life of a mlitary spouse is a hard one—movement, uncertainty and never adequate funds. Thus has been the lot of military families through history.

I wish you good fortune, health and safety—and good hunting.

  22. devildog6771 Says:

 Ok, I am a little confused. What about your aurgery? Are you still going to have it? I mean I’m not ungreatful. I appreciate everything you and your wife have sacrificed for our country.

But, will you be douing the same job? Will you do something else or what? An I jumping the gun here, lol?
By the way, did I say THANK YOU and YOUR wife?

  23. American Soldier Says:

    Devildog,

Surgery is in two weeks. For a little while I will most likely step back from the line until I am healed up.

  24. kat in ga Says:

Found this quote today, just HAD to pass it along:

‘The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him.” ~G. K. Chesterton

  25. Basilides Says:

The recruitment picture from Ur reminded me of something I read about Iraq. As I was reading the list, I thought it might be fun for soldiers who are serving in Iraq to share with their kids. Kids might think it’s cool to know their dad or mom is serving where the garden of Eden was, where Noah built his ark, where Daniel went to the lions, etc.

    Iraq in the Bible:

    1. The garden of Eden was in Iraq.
    2. Mesopotamia, which is now Iraq, was the cradle of civilization.
    3. Noah built the ark in Iraq.
    4. The Tower of Babel was in Iraq.
    5. Abraham was from Ur, which is in Southern Iraq.
    6. Isaac’s wife Rebekah is from Nahor, which is in Iraq.
    7. Jacob met Rachel in Iraq.
    8. Jonah preached in Nineveh- which is in Iraq.
    9. Assyria, which is in Iraq, conquered the ten tribes of Israel.
    10. Amos cried out in Iraq.
    11. Babylon, which is in Iraq, destroyed Jerusalem.
    12. Daniel was in the lion’s den in Iraq.
    13. The three Hebrew children were in the fire in Iraq (Jesus had been in Iraq also as the fourth person in the fiery furnace!)
    14. Belshazzar, the King of Babylon saw the “writing on the wall” in Iraq.
    15. Nebuchadnezzar, King of Babylon, carried the Jews captive into Iraq.
    16. Ezekiel preached in Iraq.
    17. The wise men were from Iraq.
    18. Peter preached in Iraq.
    19. The “Empire of Man” described in Revelation is called Babylon, which was a city in Iraq.

And you have probably seen this one. Israelis the nation most often mentioned in the Bible. But do you know which nation is second? It is Iraq!
However, that is not the name that is used in the Bible. The names used in the Bible are Babylon, Land of Shinar, and Mesopotamia. The word Mesopotamia means between the two rivers, more exactly between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers. The name Iraq, means country with deep roots.

Indeed Iraqis a country with deep roots and is a very significant country in the Bible.

No other nation, except Israel, has more history and prophecy associated it than Iraq.

  26. Monica Says:

    Basilides,
It just so happened that my son was studying ancient Mesopotamia while Stan was deployed in Iraq. We were able to turn his ancient history lesson into a current events lesson as well and it helped him not only learn about the olden days of the middle east, it also lessened his confusion regarding where Stan was, and what was happening over there.

  27. Barb Says:

AS - You already ranked high on the Awesome scale, but this is quite a topper! “Thank you” doesn’t close to conveying how much I appreciate your service, and your family’s.
Excuse me - Gotta go order your book now …

  28. Janice Says:

I’m going to sound really stupid, but what is it when you re-enlist? I thought you were discharged because of an injury….will you go active now?

  29. American Soldier Says:

    Janice,

No need to feel that way. Maybe go back a few months and read some entry’s. I will give you more of an insight of who I am.

I am not active duty anymore. I am in the reserve side of the house.

  30. Janice Says:

Been following you for a long time………….but have been away for awhile because of a really severe illness with my son………..so I have a lot of catching up to do…….
More power to you though……Obviously can’t keep a good man down!

  31. CJ Says:

    Thanks from a grateful heart!

  32. peter minoc Says:

I can’t fully express how greatful my family and I for your service.
My father spent 24 years in the Army and I know the sacrifice you and your family make. Thank you again and God Bless!!

  33. patti bader Says:

My pride in you is only surpassed by the pride I have for my own son. Thank you for your service,
    Patti

  34. Tom Devine Says:

You’re the man. Heartfelt thanks to you and your wonderfuly supportive family for re-enlisting.

I just finished reading David McCullough’s ‘1776′ where it is described how many soldiers deserted Washington’s ragtag army in their time of need.

Luckily, enough brave Americans stayed and today we honor their courage and commitment.

You and thousands like you are Americans who ’stay’ and thus will never be forgotten.

  35. susan Says:

Without the American soldier our world would be lost in a desert of destitude despotism.

I am so thankful for committed Americans who understand the importance of continuing to stand and defend in the most challenging of times.

  36. Lori Says:

 I want to thank you for all your efforts and you wifes as well. I know what kind of choice you had to make because my Fiance’ made the same decision to re-enlist. He had done his 4 years and did 3 years of reserve. He was in the reserves when he and I met. He got out to come home with me to have our first son. After the birth of our second son, which was 12 days before Sept.11, he made the decsion to go back in the reserves. I was lucky because he didn’t have to go to Iraq this time, but he was very upset about it. He told me that the reason he was going back in the Marines was so that his children didn’t have to live the fear that if they are somewhere they don’t have to worry about the building they are in blowing up. I was devistated when he told me that he was re-enlisting. I was a mother of 2 very small children and I didn’t understand until the shock of post-partium and the attack wore off but now whenever he tells me that he was some training to do for preperation to go to Iraq, I just take a deep breath, say a quick prayer and tell him to have fun. He loves his Marine Corps as well as his children so now I fully understand why he does what he does and why all our men and women do what they do. I love all you guys for being so brave. You are in my hearts and in my prayers every night. Tell your wife the toughest job a wife has is being married to a Marine or any military personal. She is a brave woman also. God bless her and your family.

  37. SUE Says:

I believe the brave Soldiers are the most special people  As I had a son in the Army for 22 years. He was in Iraq and I love and support all our troops.Thank you and your family for being a Military Family.God Bless You

  38. Tosha Says:

My gratitude goes out to you and your family!
    Thanks!!

  39. Tosha Says:

    Kat in GA:

    I love that quote!

  40. Kat in GA Says:

 Me, too! From all the oodles of milblogs I’ve read, and what our heroes have told me themselves, it is very true!!!!

  41. Sherri Says:

Please add me to the list of those saying Thank You for your service and also sending wishes for a GREAT surgeon and a speedy recovery.

  42. AFSister Says:

    AWESOME!

I’m glad you decided to re-enlist. It’s so apparent that you love the military. Congrats!

  43. devildog6771 Says:

It’s not enough, but, Thank you!

  44. Iraqi Guy Says:

Poor Americans, the picture above shows how desperate you are to have a real history, one that goes deep into time, challenging all the disasters, and stands still with pride , for not much but only few thousand years !!!
I really thank you for the freedom you were supposed to bring. If you call the death of an average of 100 civilians daily in iraq as Freedom .. then hurray , you have served humanity.
